Get the Most Out of Summer with August PowerPerks

.................................................................................................................

August is a tricky time of year. For some of us it means summer’s last hurrah, one last chance to take a run through a sprinkler. For some it means the first day of school is here or just around the corner. Here at PerkStreet it means new PowerPerks!

This month’s PowerPerks poll featured a mix of fun in the sun and hitting the books, and you voted to have your cake and eat it, too. During the month of August you will earn 5% cash back on non-PIN purchases at:

Amusement Parks

If you want to scare yourself and scramble your stomach, do it by riding a roller coaster instead of racking up credit card debt paying for a family day at the park.
Because we believe in doing right by our customers, I want to point out that this merchant category may not apply to all amusement park purchases. Many food and retail vendors within amusement parks are independently owned and/or operated and may not be transactions coded this way. Tickets for entry and season tickets do come under this heading.

Textbooks.comSM, Chegg.com®, Half.com®

Bookworms have expensive diets these days, and the cost of returning to school every year is getting tougher to manage. Luckily there are a variety of options for ordering cheaper textbooks online. When I was in grad school we used to have an informal book swap to help us keep costs down, which is a great way to pay forward all the savings you’ll get this semester!

Looking for more ways to save on textbooks? You can rent them for your Kindle!

And just for fun we threw in:

The Apple® Store

I used a typewriter in high school and it was mostly rich kids who had their own computers when I got to college. Now students of every age are expected, even required, to bring their own laptops with them. The good news is that most schools and colleges offer discount programs with the Apple store. The better news is that if you make that purchase with your PerkStreet card in August, you’re going to earn 5% cash back.

Are you heading back to school? Already thinking about winter vacation? How will you earn PowerPerks this month?

Details: The amount you can earn at the 5% cash back bonus rate is limited to $250 per household annually (starting on the day your account was opened). The total amount of cash back you can earn remains unlimited. Unless specific stores are named, qualifying purchases are determined by MCC codes. Non-PIN debit card purchases will earn 5% cash back in August 2011 at the following retailers: Textbooks.comSM, Chegg.com®, Half.com®, and the Apple® store (online and in-store; does not apply to iTunes purchases), as well as at Amusement Parks. (purchases with MCC code 7996).

Perfect…I am planning to go to an amusement park sometime during the month before school restarts.  Would the amusement park include local fairs like county for example?

  • Bianca

Are Sea World & San Diego Zoo consider Amusement parks :)

  • Aaron

You’re kidding me! Just bought a new MacBook Pro… bummer.

  • CathyF7

Awesome, we’re planning a trip to SeaWorld, San Antonio, so works for me!

Local fair tickets are tough – the ones that do accept credit cards for entrance fees may not categorize themselves as amusement parks. I would err on the side of caution and say no, although you might also “perk” up your visit by redeeming your perks for a MasterCard gift card and use it while you’re there!

Sea World is – the Zoo comes under a different category though.

I use half.com to buy CD’s and rip them in .flac format to my computer and then resell them on half.com Cheapest way to get .flac lossless CD quality music. Really can’t buy lossless mp3 files and buying used CD’s is cheaper than .99 a song plus you get to resell them after you rip them to your computer.

Disney tickets will be included in this – just check the disclaimer in the post that the shops and restaurants Disney may categorize differently.

    Juanita,
I bought my iPad in June. Sometimes it’s tough to time PowerPerks perfectly for everyone, but we love being able to focus on offering bonus rewards at retailers that are meaningful to you. By the way, while we’re talking about iPads — One of our Customer Columnists, Julie Mayfield, wrote about ways she saves money with her iPad a few months back. Here’s a link to that article: http://blog.perkstreet.com/3-ways-your-ipad-can-help-you-save-money-and-live-a-better-financial-life/

Have a good one and thanks for stopping by.
