Short Film from Bodega’s ‘The Mapping Project’

Bodega activated their first presentation of independent film at the PerkStreet Lounge, transforming it into an intimate cinema setting for 75 people.

Opening with a short film by Sam Valenti, founder of the innovative and cult music label, Ghostly International , it profiled ‘a day in the life of’ DJ/Producer Michna as he discussed his rise to success, from his days as a music student in Miami to putting out his most recent mix tape on cassette.

The much talked about music documentary feature, Todd P Goes to Austin, tracked Brooklyn bands such as Matt & Kim, Mika Miko, The Death Set, Best Fwends and Ninjasonik as they took to the road to reach Austin for SXSW, all to be part of Todd P’s big idea; create a space for 100 bands to perform over five days, all for free. Jay Buim, the director of the documentary, joined Todd P following the screening, to be part of a Q&A with John Cramer from Nylon magazine, who kicked off the opening discussion.

This month Bodega focused their initiative on how independent film and music in the borough of Brooklyn creates a movement and wave in culture, drawing together a unique and interesting audience of film makers, local music heads and budding entrepreneurs. Todd P’s passion and insight into the local DIY music culture urged debate within the audience about what was next for new cultural movements in the face of the corporate giants and massive marketing machines. It seems at the end of the day, it is grassroots screenings like these is where culture burgeons and new waves of innovation really sprout from.
